Last War of Heavenloids and Akutoloids, Musashi no Ken, Rio Rainbow Gate, Kimi ni Todoke 2nd

Musashi no Ken (1985): Oh the 80s music, and retro animation and cute puppy. This is not for me though. Dropped.

Last War of Heavenloids and Akutoloids(2009): lovely soundtrack, pretty background art, i was enjoying the atmosphere from the fantasy worlds, and the explanations to previous events, but eventually I found the plot too slow and dropped it.

Rio Rainbow Gate 1: The girls are cute (it looks like blusher has fallen on her ample bosom *facepalm*) but I didn’t find anything really likable about this apart from the ED theme…and that’s not a good sign. 1.5/5

Kimi ni Todoke 2nd Season 1: I prefer the art in this one, but romance isn’t my favourite theme. however the comedy makes up for it a little. Doesn’t really hold my interest. 2/5

The Awakening of Trailblazer, Nobita and the Great Mermaid Battle, Mai Mai Miracle

The Awakening of Trailblazer: I kept nodding off half way through this movie, partly because I’m a bit unwell and because there was so much action that after excitiedly following it all for a while the novelty wore off and I just wanted to see how it would end. I did like the ELS enemy and when it *spoiler* merges completely with a ship, overwhelms Earth fighters, and merges partially with a human I thought it was pretty cool. I liked the Setsuna flashback stuff. I’m not sure why the ending went so by so fast, was so pretty, and seemed to be how life was all important. I could rewatch it to try and understand, but to be honest I just didn’t like it enough to care. Enjoyment 2/5

Nobita and the Great Mermaid Battle: very cute but I think I prefer Doraemon in manga form. Doraemon’s voice is surprisingly annoying. Always loved the cute technology ideas in this. I’d like to press a button and be a mermaid for a few hours…until the novelty wore off, or I started thinking about sushi. Dropped half way through movie, more interested in levelling my Paladin in WoW. XD

Mai Mai Miracle: Relaxed slice of life feel, post second world war setting, gentle music, really lovely art, likeable characters. So cute when they eat the alcholic chocolate! I lost interest as the plot progressed, I prefered all the cute stuff with the goldfish. Beautiful animation at the end <3 4/5

Trigun Badlands Rumble, Girls’ Generation, AKB48

Trigun Badlands Rumble, is mostly about bounty hunters, robbery, barfights, revenge, donuts, *spoiler* thinking Vash is dead!, a giant light bulb defying physics, Wolfwood looking super hot (<3), and cute girls with attitude. I prefered watching Wolfwood to Vash in the end, Vash is too much of a joker. Enjoyment 4.5/5

Also, I listened to some of the music in the charts in Japan. I recognised and enjoyed AKB48 (Beginner), but also discovered Girls’ Generation (SNSD). I really loved their music video Gee. I found myself click on the suggested links and seeing more of their videos and some cute Korean Boy bands too. I officially <3 K-pop now! Had these 2 songs on repeat all day…I might go a bit crazy with pop-joy-brain-explosion!

Science Fiction Anime: is there anything to look forward to in 2011?

Senjo no Valkyria 3 “Dare ga Tame no Juyu” OAV. Due sometime in the spring. This is a promotional video for the Unrecorded Chronicles game due out in Japan on January 27. The first Valkyria Chronicles is available to play in the UK on PS3. The second is out now for the PSP. For fans of military anime. No release date.

Moretsu Pirates. Based on the space opera novels Mini-Skirt Pirates by Yuichi Sasamoto. According to ANN “The story centers around a spirited high school girl named Marika. She keeps herself busy with the space yacht club and her part-time job at a high-class retro café. One day, two men suddenly appear and claim to be subordinates of her dead father. They demand that she assume command of the space pirate ship Benten Maru. A privateer ship’s compact was made during a war of independence a century ago, and according to that compact, the ship must be inherited by the captain’s next direct descendant. Marika finds herself embarking on a new life as a space pirate.” No release date.

Infinite Stratos. Infinite Stratos are weaponized exoskeletons thought to only be useable by women, one boy discovers he can operate one and goes to learn how to use one in a school full of girls. Here is a promo video. It starts January 6th.

Wolverine. Wondering how X-men anime will compare to the comics and movies. Really could anything be worse than the last attempt at a Wolverine movie?

Soko Kihei Votoms: Koei Futatabi. I really enjoyed the Pailsen Files series and I am currently working my way through Phantom Arc, excited to see more Votoms in production. Starts January the 8th.

Freezing. Based on the korean manhwa, the story description on Wikipedia seems promising. “Set in a slightly futuristic world where Earth has been invaded and is at war with aliens from another dimension called the Nova, the story follows the adventures of a Japanese boy named Kazuya Aoi who enrolls for training at a special school for genetically modified girls called Pandoras who battle the aliens, and their male partners, called Limiters, who use a special power called “freezing” to limit their opponent’s mobility. The protagonist makes the acquaintance of an unusual older girl named Bridgette L. Satellizer who appears to be the most powerful Pandora in her class, but has not yet chosen a male partner to be her Limiter due to her intense aphephobia, or fear of being touched, a condition that had arisen from a traumatic childhood where she had been sexually abused by her foster brother. In spite of the warnings of all his friends, Aoi decides to be her Limiter.” Also starts January 8th.

Cardfight!! Vanguard. When I see a picture of a young boy grasping a small card with a look of satisfaction on his face I guess it’s going to be an over the top action series aimed at young boys and totally something I won’t like.

Level E. Based on the manga described on ANNTsutsui Yukitaka is a freshman who has finally convinced his parents that he is ready to live on his own. When he arrives at his new apartment, he is surprised to find that someone has arrived before him; A young man who claims that he is an alien and that he is suffering from amnesia. A series of short stories involving aliens on Earth.” Starts January 10th.

Fractale. Wow the art for this on the website looks stunning, got high hopes for this one. Starts January 13th. According to ANN, “The story takes place in an island, where a “Fractale System” is beginning to collapse. One day, Crane finds an injured girl called Phryne under a cliff. She disappears leaving a pendant. Crane sets out for a journey with the girl-shaped avatar Nessa to look for Phryne and discovers the secret of the Fractale System.

Gantz (movie) Trailer. After marathoning the anime, I am interested to see how this turns out. Although I’m guessing they’re not going to give the main female gravity defying enlarging breasts throughout the movie! Out in cinemas January 29th in Japan.

Macross Frontier Sayonara no Tsubasa (movie) released in cinemas on February 26th.

Doraemon: Shin Nobita to Tetsujin Heidan – Habatake Tenshi-tachi (movie) a new Doraemon movie out during Japan’s spring break.

Asobi ni Ikuyo! A sequel to Asobi ni Ikuyo Bombshells from the Sky. More adventures with Kio Kakazu and the cat eared girl from space. I did not enjoy the first episode of the first series, but I’ll give it another chance if I have time.

Ghost in the Shell S.A.C. Solid State Society 3D (movie) Out March 26th. The trailer reminds me how badly I need a ghost in the shell marathoning anime session.

Tiger & Bunny. I wasn’t excited about this until I discovered it has the same director and music composer as Karas. Selling company logo space on the characters seems a bit tacky though, so I’m half excited and half groaning in anticipation. Oh the confusion. Out in April.

Steins;Gate. Since the plot synopsis made me laugh out loud I am hoping to be surprised, “Steins;Gate is about a group of friends who have customized their microwave into a device that can send text messages to the past.” The art does look good. Out in April.

Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko. Light novel about a girl who claims to be an alien. Out in April.

Danball Senki. Based around a robot role-playing game. Out in April

Appleseed XIII. A retelling of the manga, ANN says, “Following a world war that killed half the world’s population, the city-nation of Olympus stands as a beacon of hope in a world of chaos and conflict. The utopian metropolis is governed by Gaia, a vast artificial intelligence, and administered by a genetically engineered humanoids known as Bioroids.

Although Olympus seems like a peaceful city on the surface, racial (human vs. bioroids vs. cyborgs), religious, and political conflicts lurk underneath — threatening to overturn the delicately balanced “peace.” Security threats such as terrorists and anti-government criminals abound, so the use of force becomes a necessary evil even in this so-called “utopia.”

An American Transformers movie, Dark of the Moon (trailer!) isn’t exactly anime, but I thought it was worth a mention, at least it can’t be as bad as Revenge of the Fallen.

It is frustrating to have to wait all the way until October to see Coppelion which sounds very exciting! According to ANN, “The story is set in 2036, after radioactive contamination from a nuclear accident has put Tokyo under a blockade. Three high school girls have been sent to this dead city. Thanks to genetic engineering, the three girls have been impervious to radioactivity since birth. They form a special forces unit, codenamed “Coppelion,” in the 3rd Division of Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force.

Resident Evil: Degeneration was a forgettable film with so-so animation, so my reaction to Resident Evil: Damnation was, oh no, not another one. Who knows, maybe it will be better.

I am most looking forward to: Coppelion, Steins;Gate, Fractale, Freezing, the new Votoms and Infinite Stratos. I hope at least one of them lives up to expectations, and that many more science fiction series are announced during the year.
