‘Missing 06’ the anime that wasn’t fansubbed in English from Worst to Best #9-3, Silk Road Boy Yuta, Koi Suru Tenshi Angelique, Sore Yuke! Tetsunoshin, Marginal Prince, Humanoid Ningen Bem, Onegai My Melody, Papillon Rose.

Now we’ve hit the anime where there seems to be a little bit more depth to the plot, artwork or just something funny or cute that caught my attention…

9. Silk Road Boy Yuto

I tentatively place this at number 9, it may turn out to be wonderful, but I can find nothing about this other than slightly promising images on the website. I think some people will be put off this by the computer graphic style but it could be cool? A boy being sent back in time to the silk road in China certainly sounds like it might have a few cultural points of interest but I guess it might be quite shallow if it’s aimed at the kids?
8. Koi Suru Tenshi Angelique ~Kokoro no Mezameru Toki~

I’ve discovered I like reverse harem bishi fests like Haruka 8. However, I feel the male characters have too much of the ‘ridiculous’ factor for me to enjoy this series, especially the one with pink/yellow hair (!) and the lead girl looks a bit plain. There are a lot of lovely screencaps of the bishis in all their glory here, by Novastorm.

7. Sore Yuke! Tetsunoshin (Wan Wan Serebu Soreyuke Tetsunoshin)

This gets slightly higher up on the list due to the ‘cute doggy’ factor.

It seems the human characters have doggy counterparts? Anyway, the art looks cute, as do the opening theme, and ending theme (doggy romance?!). Unfortunately, it does look like it’s aimed at the young ‘uns, and the character design is nothing special, so I’m not placing it higher on the list even if it does have cute doggies. Matthew has been blogging this kawaiii series here.

6. Marginal Prince

Oh…”it’s such a hard (gay) life being a hot bishi”.

I watched a random episode of this raw, and even though my Japanese is too poor to understand the dialogue it was pretty clear what was going on. These boys are the typical bishi boys with girlie emotions, and to be honest I’m highly surprised no-one has been blogging a HARD GAY parody of this, because 1/3 of the way through I ended up thinking, ‘Hmm which bishies should pair up and bonk?’

(He shouldn’t smile with his mouth open and shut his eyes…not in this house.)

Also, I ended up inventing a very different translation of what they were saying…”in my miiiiiiiind”. Oh, and they have a butler called ‘Butler’, which I find highly amusing (thanks to Cinammon Ass and his review of episode one for that.) So why is this higher up the list? Entertainment value, and the fact that the bishies are relatively attractive. It still seems very silly nonsense for yaoi fangirls (and gay men?) and I’m left highly intrigued by the psychotic bunny ‘thing’…

5. Humanoid Monster Bem (Yokai Ningen Bem)

This is a remake of the now rather dated original. I’ve put this higher up the list as despite a really ugly set of character designs, the horror artwork on offer is quite impressive in places, and I do like a good bit of horror and gore.

It’s a shame Bem looks like a frog, eugh! There are lots of big screenshots of this on the website if you’re interested, and WRex has blogged the first 7 episodes.

4. Onegai my Melody ~Kuru Kuru Shuffle!~

Even though this seems aimed at children I love the look of this because of the cute, zany, funny characters, especially these two:

Did I mention how *INSANELY CUUUUUTE* (and a bit evil) this was?

The character design is clear and simple which makes cute kiddy anime sooo much better.I don’t feel I can put it any higher up the list due to the ugly bunny, which reminds me of Miffy, ik.

Matthew has blogged a random episode here. If you like cute, violent and funny anime you HAVE to watch Ebichu the housekeeping hamster – incidentally Ebichu is directed by the same person who directed Onegai My Melody. ^_^

3. Papillon Rose

Hot babes in aprons, stockings and slippers? Yes please!

…and various other costumes it seems ;)

On reflection I might have been better off putting this further down, as I’ve now read that the OVA original was entertaining and this is just silly. Nevertheless, an anime that takes the piss out of a whole host of animes makes me giggle, and I want to watch it and giggle some more! White Sonata has blogged the first episode here. Oh, and there are some lovely cosplayers of this anime…

On that note, I’ll leave you wondering about the top 2… *^_^*

‘Missing 06’ the anime that wasn’t fansubbed in english from worst to best #17-10, Kinnikuman, Jinzo Konchu Kabuto Bora VxV, Yu-Gi-Oh, Ryusei no Rockman, Bakkyuu HIT!, Bakegyamon, Gin-iro no Olynssis and Spider Riders.

~EDIT: these are the unsubbed TV series, not including films or OVAs~

If any of this is wrong and some of these series were subtitled (in English) then let me know! It’s only a rough estimation of quite how wonderful/diabolical I feel these series were from what I can gather from anime websites, bloggers who blog about raws (or chinese subs) and the odd tit bits on youtube. This spans beginning of January to the end of October 2006, as Nov/Dec is too soon to tell if things haven’t been subbed! :)

There are 17 series unsubbed by my reconing (blame Animenewsnetwork if i’ve missed any series!), so starting at the bottom…
17. Kinnikuman Nisei – Ultimate Muscle 2 (EDIT: being subbed)

Hopefully the fact that I placed this even below Yu-Gi-Argh displays my distaste towards the artwork/plot. Wrestlers in outer space? A main character with a face closely resembling the backside of a small furry animal…um, no thanks!

16. Jinzo Konchu Kabuto Borg VxV

When faced with a bunch of anime which look like the classic, young-boy-develops-character-by-kicking-ass,-with-dire-artwork, I resort to looking at character art work. There were no girls on the character page, and no mentions in any blog so this got shunted to the bottom of the pile! One to avoid like the plague perhaps…moving swiftly on…

15. Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monsters (EDIT: being subbed)
Words cannot describe…just imagine the facial expression as I say, “Aaaaaaaaaargh”.

14. Ryusei no Rockman

The character design looks more attractive on this one, but still…it looks baaaaad.

13. Bakkyuu HIT! Crash Bedaman

The character design looks a little better here! There’s lots of guns… it might be mildy entertaining, but silly:

12. Bakegyamon

Here’s a review of episode 1 of Bakegyamon by Cinnamon Ass. The demented clown/sunflower ‘thing’ is rather bizarre, but I quite liked the female character design, cute!

The Bakegyamon opening theme is here.

11. Gin-iro no Olynssis (update 24/1/07 – subbed by Shinsen-Subs.)

I watched a random raw episode of Gin-iro no Olynssis and it seemed a fairly average sci-fi/fantasy romance drama. The artwork wasn’t very inspiring, a bit clumsy, and the people shooting weapons at a hologram in the sky, well…it didn’t exactly make me rush and watch more of the series raw. however, if you are interested in finding out more about this series, TL-Chan has blogged about it here. There opening theme is here.

10. Spider Riders

We’re now entering the anime where I quite like the artwork, Spider Riders has a simple and clear character design, and some of the screenshots I saw were quite pretty. TL-Chan has blogged about this series here. It’s also fun to watch the transformation video on youtube, giggle, and shout ‘Arachnopoweeeeer!’ to make your family stare at you and look concerned… lalalaaaaa.

More of the unsubbed anime countdown tomorrow! (It does get better I promise!) Any guesses for the top 2 unsubbed animes (bearing in mind I’m a sucker for weird comedy and attractive historical anime)? I can’t offer a prize other than your ability to feel very chuffed with yourself for getting it right and treating yourself to an extra mince pie! ;)

Oh, and…”Happy Christmas Everyone!”

Blog Rename, Rethink, Revamp, Re-‘everything’

I never liked the name Hazel:Animenut, it was only meant to be temporary but it kinda just stuck. So it’s now ‘Anime Infatuation’ for the foreseeable future.

I’m finally on my Christmas break, after handing in an essay on Japanese Art a tad late this morning…woo! *^_^*
So I shall be trying to catch up with my backlog, which is looking rather huge *eek*. Over the next couple of weeks I shall be reading and reviewing some academic books on anime/manga, as it’s time for me to think about my University 3rd year Independent Study Project and Extended Essay – both of which I’m writing on anime/manga art. Still undecided what to write about, hesitantly said one will be on science fiction the other on historical anime. Although I’d quite like to write about something fun/closer to my heart like yuri/horror or a favourite artist such as Tsutomu Nihei. It depends on finding academic literature to justify writing about ‘stuff’. Literatures in English that is, damn my lame grasp of Japanese.

Meanwhile I shall be writing about:

Anime 2006: the anime that got away, anime that was not subbed/ torrented raw, and in other cases not torrented at all…not the ‘adult’ anime though…are there adult anime fansubs?! I’m not aware of any! *LOL*

SFX Anime Special review

Maybe a look ahead at winter anime season if I feel inclined, but previously I’ve wanted anime series to be a pleasant surprise (or horrid, aaargh what is this?! for anime such as lovedol). If I approach all episode ones with ‘I expect nothing, or I expect the worst’ I’m happier :)

I should sort out a picture for the top of my blog, it’s my new years resolution to sketch more so it might end up being a row of Mokkun pictures (kawai!). :P

…and the usual anime, manga reviews.

I’m seriously considering watching anime raw instead of subtitled if it’s ‘easy watching’ like la corda d’oro, not anime like bakumatsu…that would be totally confusing?
