Mobile Suit Gundam Seed C.E.73: Stargazer (機動戦士ガンダムSEED) 1: Stage-1

This was saved for me by the ‘almost’ relationship between the beautiful Selene and Major Edmond Ducreau, I particularly liked the scenes in the light of the goldfish tanks, very pretty.

I’ve never seen Gundam Seed anime before so I’m guessing there were loads of references that an outsider would miss. Several characters who have grown up it seems? However, this is still an average enjoyable watch as a standalone episode.

Earth is being devastated as bits of Junius Seven (whatever that is) collide with the Earth. There are lots of really dramatic images of the destruction which I enjoyed including a tsunami. Sometimes too much smoke and fast frames so they don’t have to draw in too much detail. Sven is waiting for Selene in the launching station, she is due to be in the shuttle launch later that day, however, the shuttle base is being seriously flooded and damaged and Selene is caught in the middle of a city in disaster with Edmond.

An enemy mobile suit appears in the city firing everywhere. It’s a shame you can’t see it properly, the animation is a little too dark. Selene manages to find a boat to try and get to the launch, meanwhile Edmond commands a tank to try and destroy the suit…she manages to get the launch in time, Edmond destroys the suit and in the process almost dies himself! We see him, his face full of metal shards.

Shock horror, the enemy suit was full of angry (dead) children of ZAFT (whatever ZAFT is!). Sven launches the Strike Noir suit…what will happen next?!

I liked the end music, ‘Hoshi no Tobira’ by Satori Negishi, but overall I wasn’t filled with enthusiasm to watch more, unfortunately this seems to be an anime aimed exclusively at the Gundam Seed fans. Shame.

  1. Gundam SEED: C.E. 73 Stargazer is only three 15-minute episodes long, there’s simply no time to ‘waste’ on explaining the background story because they wouldn’t have any time left to air their own story if they did.

To truly understand what’s going on, you aught to have seen Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED: Destiny up to episode 7… all of the characters featured in this anime are entirely original by the way.

    *Short Summary*
ZAFT = Zodiac Alliance of Freedom Treaty: alliance of space colonies consisting of genetically enhanced humans called Coordinators (Selene is a Coordinator as well, but she’s not a citizen of ZAFT).
EAF = Earth Alliance Federation, alliance of ordinary humans called Naturals (Edmond is a Natural and used to be an EAF tank commander).

ZAFT and EAF went to war after the EAF nuked Junius Seven in the original Gundam SEED. They managed to make peace at the end of Gundam SEED, but now rogue ZAFT pilots have managed to rig the remains of Junius Seven and sent it flying towards Earth, although not before the bulk of it was diverted by the true ZAFT forces…

DSSD = Deep Space Survey and Development organization, includes: Sol, Selene & Edmond.
Phantom Pain = EAF-affiliated (sort of) unit of elite pilots, includes: Sven, Mudie & Shamz.

  2. How can you watch an OVA of a 100 episode “saga” and expect to understand everythinng lol? Anyway luckily this is a pretty good 16 minutes. In fact, it’s better than the 50 episodes of Destiny.
